A 3 week summer theater workshop where participants will be given instruction and training in the areas of singing, acting, dancing, film/television acting, auditioning, technical theater, and more.

At the end of the session there will be a fully staged musical open to family, friends, and the public!

About Spotlight

THE SPOTLIGHT THEATER WORKSHOP was designed not only to be a lot of fun, but to also focus on strengthening the skills of our participants and teaching them new and exciting elements involve d in the performing arts. Some of our classes will include acting, singing, dancing, technical theater, improv, and auditioning skills. Also, we're very excited about incorporating film/television acting and production into the workshop!

Monologues will also be worked on during class time so that upon completion of the program, participants will be comfortable using their pieces at auditions in the future. There will also be many outdoor activities, free time, and special guests!

Our staff consists of various professional theater artists who are extremely passion about both performing and teaching their skills to others!

Our Mission

SPOTLIGHT aims to engage today's youth in the discovery of theatre's many components. In an exciting, non-competitive, fun filled environment, we strive to enrich appreciation for Theater Arts through education, creativity, and passion. Participants will receive theatre arts training both on stage and backstage which foster each individual's talents and aspirations with an emphasis on teamwork and personal growth.

Meet The Staff

Harley Yanoff (Director/Acting) is currently a New York based actor. He is a graduate of Brandeis University (cum laude) with a B.A. in Theater Arts Performance (High Honors). He was most recently seen on the NY stage as Tom Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie with The Spiral Theater Company. He made his professional theater debut in A Little Night Music with the Lyric Stage Company of Boston. At Brandeis University he was seen as Jack in Into The Woods, Bob in Balm In Gilead, Chance in The Water Children, and Edges, a new song cycle. Regional theater credits include Jeff in Kimberly Akimbo, Troy Bolton in High School Musical, Hugo Peabody in Bye Bye Birdie, The Artful Dodger in Oliver, and Harvey Cheyne, for which he received an EMACT award for Best Actor in a lead role in the New England premiere of Captains Courageous. His film work includes supporting roles in The Town (starring Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner, and Jon Hamm), 21 (starring Kevin Spacey), My Best Friend's Girl (Starring Kate Hudson and Dane Cook), Don McKay (Starring Thomas Hayden Church, Elizabeth Shue, and Melissa Leo). He's had many starring roles in short films such as Cinemazing with Greth Productions, The Burn Book with Jodom Pictures, Noted with Who Productions, Key's To Success with Code Red Productions as well as in an independent feature film, Remedial Attraction which premiered at the Landmark Theatre in Kendall Square. His television credits include a role on the Fox TV hit show Fringe as well as featured work on CBS's The Good Wife, WB's Gossip Girl, . His commercial work includes Subway, McDonald's, American Express, and a recent spot for the November elections held in Massachusetts. He is a proud member of The Actors Equity Association (AEA), The Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and the The American Federation of Television and Radio Artist (AFTRA). He is also a professionally trained vocalist and released his demo CD in 2006. For eight summers he was the head counselor at the Turtle Lane Playhouse Summer Children's Theater Workshop where he also taught an acting and auditioning class. He has also worked with Boston Casting where he has assisted with many projects. He is thrilled to begin the fifth summer of The Spotlight Summer Theater Workshop! Benjamin Sloane (Asst Director/Acting) is currently a NY based actor and thrilled to be a part of the Spotlight Theater Workshop for the fifth summer! Ben grew up in Rochester, New York and graduated from Emerson College with a BFA in Acting. He has worked with the Stoneham Rep, Midtown International Theater Festival, Stages in the Sound, the National New Play Network, and most recently, the Curious Theater. He has also worked closely with Machina Pictures on music videos and commercials. Ben is a proud member of the Actors Equity Association (AEA) and has worked at great lengths to become proficient in Shakespeare, clown, improvisation, solo-performance, mask, puppetry and movement. Talula Christian (Artistic Designer) was born and raised in Southeast Missouri and is new to the Boston area. She graduated with a B.F.A in Theatre with an emphasis in Costume Design and a second emphasis in Wig and Make-up Design from Webster University's Conservatory For The Theatrical Arts in May of 2009. She made her professional debut in September of 2009 with The Addams Family Musical for which she was the design intern. Her other theatre credits include Picasso At The Lapin Agile (Costume Design), Jacques Brel (Costume Design), Cabaret (Wig and Make-up Design) and Our Town (Wig and Make-up Design). Talula is currently designing costumes for the Brookline Hill's high school production of Batboy: The Musical and is teaching The Fundamentals of Drawing for The Munroe Center For The Arts in Lexington. Coming up in March she will also be teaching a three week course in Costume Design at the Arlington Children's Theatre. In her spare time Talula enjoys working as a freelance portrait artist, mural artist and photographer. She is currently working towards finishing a series of figure drawings for her gallery opening in February. Talula was thrilled to be asked to join the Spot-Light team and is looking forward to an extremely fulfilling summer! Lynn R. Guerra (Dance) just landed back in Boston after a two year stint in France and is thrilled for the opportunity to work at Spotlight for the first time this summer. She spent the past two years dancing with Terpsichora dance company in Cherbourg, France. Before her time abroad she worked as a dance teacher and choreographer with the Dance Place in Arlington, Arlington Children's Theater and Artspan summer camp. She has also worked as a principal actress with the NewRep, The Publick Theatre and ShakespeareNow! theater companies. Lynn studied Fine Arts and Theatre at Oxford University and Hofstra University and graduated with a BA in Creative Studies.Bennett Hartnett (Tech) was born and raised in northern Virginia, and has lived in Massachusetts for the past 5 years. He has just finished his first year as a student at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, and plans on studying Technical Theater. This will be his third summer at Spotlight, and he looks forward to working on Grease (which he acted in in 8th grade), as well as finally being able to work on Seussical. During his time at Concord-Carlisle High School, Bennett worked on many shows, including Moliere's The Learned Ladies, Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Evita, Crazy For You, Miss Saigon, and Wonderful Town. At Hampshire, he has worked on several shows written by Hampshire students. At Spotlight, he's worked on Into The Woods, High School Musical 2, Bye Bye Birdie (with a special cameo), and Willy Wonka Jr. Evan Rees (music) is so excited to be back at Spotlight for his second summer! Evan is currently pursuing a bachelor of music degree in composition with minors in piano performance and conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, IN. His work "The Summer of Wistaria" for 'cello and piano was top regional winner and third place national winner (of seven) of the Music Teachers National Association composition competition in February 2011. His song cycle "Hindsight" for baritone and piano received the Indiana University High School Composition Award in 2009 and was premiered by members of the Rivers School Conservatory faculty later that same year. In addition to awards and numerous recent commissions, he is currently at work on his second musical, a collaboration with librettist, conductor, clarinetist and fellow IU graduate Thomas Carroll. In the recent years, Evan has also become a sought-after music director, working with amateur and professional theater companies around the country. Past music direction credits include: "Fiddler On the Roof"; "Honk!"; "Company"; "Into the Woods"; "Gutenberg! The Musical!" (2010 Michigan premiere, revival and 2011 Indiana premiere); "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"; "Bye, Bye Birdie!"; "Perez Hilton Saves the Universe (Or the Greater Los Angeles Area): The Musical!"; and "Sweeney Todd." Past onstage credits include: "Wonderful Town" (Wreck); "Gutenberg! The Musical!" (Doug); "Once On This Island" (Papa Ge); "Beauty and the Beast" (Cogsworth); "Twelfth Night" (Malvolio); "Zombie Prom" (Eddie Flagrante); and "Brigadoon" (Tommy).

*Check out some of the letters and praise we've received from some of the kids and parents from Spotlight!I want to thank you again for the amazing job you and your staff did with this program. Eliza had an absolutely amazing experience and you brought out the best in her with your close coaching, directing and encouragement. The staff to student ratio is incredible.
